A Reflection on Being Held by The God Who Sees

Motherhood can sometimes feel like a quiet, invisible calling. The work is constant, the needs are endless, and recognition is rare. We pour ourselves out for our families, giving our love, energy, and time, only to feel unseen, unappreciated, or overwhelmed.

If you’ve ever found yourself in this place, you’re not alone. More importantly, God sees you.

The God Who Sees: A Source of Comfort and Strength

Scripture reminds us that our unseen labor is never hidden from God. In the wilderness, Hagar called Him El Roi—the God who sees (Genesis 16:13). Fleeing from hardship, she felt forgotten, yet God met her, acknowledged her pain, and provided for her needs.

The same God who saw Hagar sees you. He watches over you as you cook another meal, fold another load of laundry, and comfort your crying child in the middle of the night. Every unseen act of love is fully known by Him.

“For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their prayer.” (1 Peter 3:12)

Because of this truth, we can rest in His sovereignty, knowing that every sacrifice we make for our families is seen and valued.

An Invitation to Find True Rewards

When we feel unseen, we must ask ourselves: Where are we seeking validation?

  • Are we longing for recognition from our children, spouse, or society?
  • Are we measuring our worth by how much we accomplish in a day?
  • Are we looking to our role as a mother instead of Christ to define us?

While appreciation is encouraging, it was never meant to be our foundation. Jesus teaches us that true reward comes not from human praise, but from serving for God’s glory.

“And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” (Matthew 6:4)

Every unseen act—a prayer whispered over a child, a scraped knee bandaged, a late-night sacrifice—is noticed by the One whose opinion matters most. He promises an eternal reward far greater than fleeting human recognition (Romans 8:28).

The Joy of Serving in Christ’s Name

Proverbs 11:25 tells us, “Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.”

Service done in Christ’s name carries a deep joy. But this joy isn’t rooted in receiving gratitude—it comes from knowing we are fulfilling the purpose God has given us.

  • Every diaper changed,
  • Every meal prepared,
  • Every lesson patiently taught

…is an offering to the Lord. These daily acts of love shape us into the image of Christ, who came not to be served but to serve (Mark 10:45).

“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9)

When we serve for His glory alone, we experience the unique joy of being a vessel of Christ’s love.

An Invitation to Rest in God’s Sovereignty

Feeling unseen often leads to resentment or a martyr mentality in motherhood. We convince ourselves that we must hold everything together, hesitant to ask for help or set boundaries.

But God calls us to release these burdens and trust in Him. He alone holds all things together (Colossians 1:17). We are not called to be self-sufficient, but to rest in the sufficiency of Christ.

“Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

Motherhood was never meant to be carried alone. When we trust in His sovereignty, we find strength for today and hope for tomorrow.

“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9)

Rest in Christ’s Finished Work

When we feel unseen or overwhelmed by the demands of motherhood, it’s easy to measure our worth by how much we accomplish in a day. The to-do lists, the endless tasks, and even the expectations of others can leave us feeling inadequate and burdened. But the Gospel offers us a powerful truth: our value is not found in what we do but in what Christ has already done for us.

Our value is not found in what we do but in what Christ has already done.

What Does It Mean to Rest in Christ’s Work?

  • ✅ Your Identity is Secure – Christ’s sacrifice on the cross makes you fully loved, fully known, and fully redeemed (1 Peter 2:9). Your identity is no longer tied to your performance as a mother, wife, or homemaker. You are a beloved child of God, chosen and precious in His sight (1 Peter 2:9).
  • ✅ You Are Fully Redeemed – Jesus declared, “It is finished” (John 19:30). This statement encompasses not just your salvation but also your sanctification. You don’t have to earn God’s love or approval—it has already been given to you. The messy moments of motherhood and the times you feel like you’re falling short are covered by His grace.
  • ✅ God’s Grace Sustains You – You are not meant to carry the weight of motherhood alone; Christ is with you, carrying the burdens you lay at His feet. His grace is sufficient, and His power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). Lay your burdens at His feet.

Practical Ways to Rest in Christ’s Work

  1. Preach the Gospel to Yourself
Remind yourself daily of the truths of the Gospel: You are forgiven, loved, and accepted. Write out Scriptures that affirm your identity in Christ and place them where you can see them throughout the day.
  2. Prioritize Time with God
Spend time in prayer and Scripture, even if it’s just a few minutes in the morning or while the kids are napping. Let His Word renew your mind and bring peace to your soul.
  3. Release Perfectionism
Understand that God doesn’t call you to be perfect—He calls you to be faithful. Trust that He can work through your imperfections to accomplish His purposes. Philippians 1:6 reminds us that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.
  4. Find Joy in the Mundane
View the daily tasks of motherhood as acts of worship. Whether you’re changing diapers or folding laundry, do it with a heart that seeks to glorify God (Colossians 3:23). Knowing that your work is seen and valued by God can bring incredible joy and purpose.
  5. Rest in His Promises
When you feel unseen, remember His promises: 1
    • “Return, O my soul, to your rest; for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.” (Psalm 116:7)
    • “The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love.” (Zephaniah 3:17)
    • “For we who have believed enter that rest.” (Hebrews 4:3)
    • “It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.” (Psalm 127:2)
    • “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” (Psalm 91:4)
    • “I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish.” (Jeremiah 31:25)
    • “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)
    • “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23)

Resting in Christ’s finished work is not about inactivity but about releasing the need to strive and trusting that His grace is sufficient for every season of life. By anchoring your heart in His love and redemption, you can serve your family with joy, knowing that your worth is already secure.

Practical Steps for the Unseen Mom

  1. Turn to Scripture Daily: Meditate on verses that remind you of God’s presence and promises. Psalm 139 is a beautiful reminder that God knows every detail of your life.
  2. Pray Without Ceasing: Pour out your heart to God in prayer, knowing that He listens and cares.
  3. Embrace Community: Share your struggles with trusted friends, your church, or a mentor mom who can encourage you in your journey.
  4. Reframe Your Perspective: Remind yourself that your service is an act of worship, a way of glorifying God in the everyday.
  5. Rest in Christ’s Finished Work: Remember that your value is not in what you do but in who you are in Christ—fully loved, fully known, and fully redeemed.

You Are Seen, and You Are Loved

Dear mom, God sees you. He sees every quiet sacrifice and every unseen act of love. He is not distant—He is near, holding you and sustaining you through every moment.

You are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works (Ephesians 2:10). The faithfulness you pour into your family is part of His eternal plan, no matter how small or unnoticed it may seem.

So, when the days feel long and the work feels unseen, rest in this truth: God delights in you. He is with you, working through you, and He promises that your labor is not in vain.

You are not invisible to Him. You are deeply loved.
